wastewater treated effluent spill On Sunday May 20, 2018 at approximately 0800 hrs. the Springtree Waste Water Plant was experiencing very high inflows due several days of continual heavy rains. The plant have two Effluent pumps and one was out of service, It was being fitted with a new motor. The motor was the last to be installed as the older motor failed after the new VFD was installed and being tested. The removal of the failed motor and installation of the new motor was completed but not fully tested so the pump was not placed back into service yet. By the time we got the pump operational the flows through the contact basin was more than one pump could handle and the wet well overflowed. 05/21/2018 12:17 EDT Springtree Plant # 1 4350 Springtree Drive; Sunrise Fl 33351; sunrise FL; 33351 Broward Roal Small chief Operator rsmall@sunrisefl.gov (954) 572-2428 Operator Of the Facility Ted Petrides (954) 888-6035 tpetrides@sunrisefl.gov 26.177479 -80.261537 05/20/2018 08:00 EDT No 05/20/2018 10:00 EDT N Incident Location
GTL Abnormal Event 1) Treated wastewater flowed to an offsite storm drain leading to surface water from a hole in our chlorine contact basin. From security footage, we have determined it began yesterday at 12:15 pm and ended at approximately 11:30 PM. Quantities are still being determined. 2) Treated wastewater flowed to the intracoastal by exceeding our pumping capacity and overflowing to the emergency outfall. Exact times are still being determined but we estimate this began at 7 am and continued to approximately 11 PM. 3) Secondary treated wastewater overflowed the first battery of clarifiers onto the ground yesterday morning as the influent flow spiked to 98 mgd. Most if not all of this flow should have stayed within the plant site and been returned via the plant drain, but I will have to verify. Total volume of discharge of treated effluent has been calculated to 577,000 gallons. 05/21/2018 10:31 EDT GTL Regional Wastewater Facility 1765 SE 18th Street; Fort Lauderdale FL; 33316 Broward TROY BALINT Environmental Program Coordinator tbalint@fortlauderdale.gov (954) 828-7845 Environmental Program Coordinator TROY BALINT (954) 828-7845 tbalint@fortlauderdale.gov 26.099 -80.123 05/20/2018 07:00 EDT No 05/20/2018 23:30 EDT Y Broward, Incident Location
