Service Water and Gypsum Slurry overflow |
On March 15, 2022, at 11:10 pm, the Crystal River Unit 4&5 station experienced an overflow of service water and gypsum slurry from the FGD absorber, caused by a manual trip of Unit 5 due to loss of auxiliary cooling water. Most of the slurry remained on concrete and was contained. Approximately 7,500 gallons of gypsum slurry mixed with service water was released onto ground surrounding the absorber containment before the overflow could be stopped at 11:23 pm. During the time of the release the absorber pH ranged from 6.2 to 7.0 The area is being cleaned up on 5/16/23. The discharge did not reach storm drains nor surface waters and it was contained within the property. |

Circulating Water Overflow |
On May 13, 2023, at 10:20 am, the Citrus Combined Cycle Station was impacted by a severe thunderstorm. Lightning damaged instrumentation controlling the Power Block One (PB1) cooling tower blowdown. As a result, the PB1 cooling tower overflowed approximately 1/8 inch of water over the cooling tower basin wall intermittently for 10 (ten) minutes which is estimated to be around 16,000 gallons of untreated circulating seawater originating from the intake canal, with pH of 7.0 su. The water spilled to a pervious gravel surface directly outside the cooling tower basin. The PB1 cooling tower was shut down immediately following the incident and will be restored once the damaged equipment can be repaired. The circulating water did not leave the property and did not reach surface waters. |
