Bluefield Ranch Natural Area
The 3,285-acre site contains a variety of natural communities including scrub, scrubby flatwoods, flatwoods, baygall swamp, prairie hammock and depression marsh. Bluefield Ranch was purchased in the 1930's by David Iglehart, president of W.R. Grace & Company. The original ranch consisted of over 23,000 acres and served as a premiere quail area, hunted by some of Americas most wealthy. In the 1960's, most of the understory vegetation was cleared to create improved pasture for cattle. Many of the existing structures remain on the site including a grain silo, cattle pens and water troughs. Visitors to the site can walk or bike through the nature trails, camp at one of the primitive campsites or use the equestrian trails. To visit Bluefield Ranch, drive 4.1 miles south on Bluefield Road, then take a right on Bluefield Ranch Road. Drive another 1.36 miles until reaching the parking lot.
