Ponce Preserve
The 40-acre Ponce Preserve stretches from the Atlantic Ocean to the Halifax River and is home to the Green Mound State Archaeological Site, one of the largest Indian middens in Florida. The Preserve also serves as part of the eastern section of the Great Florida Birding Trail. Nature trails take visitors through coastal dunes and Maritime hammock, passing native plants which include threatened Simpson's Stoppers and two 400-year old Live Oak trees. The 1,700' boardwalk crossing the saltwater marsh has two canoe launches and a fishing deck at the river. The Preserve also provides wonderful opportunities for wildlife observation, especially during bird migrations. Manatee and dolphin are frequent visitors.
