Fort Mose

The site of the first free black settlement in St. Johns County, Fort Mose offers a visit into the past with displays and educational exhibits in the new Fort Mose Visitors Center and Museum. Managed by the Florida Park Service and St. Johns County, Fort Mose is comprised of upland Oak Hammocks and Salt Marsh habitat. Recreational amenities include picnic pavilions with benches and grills, a scenic raised boardwalk to an observation platform and the museum. St. Johns County received a Florida Inland Navigation District grant to construct a canoe/kayak platform which will be complete in 2010. The site is located along Baya Creek and Robinson Creek which are tributaries of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. Fort Mose will become an educational rest stop for users of the Florida Circumnavigational Paddling Trail.
